Campfire x : Strategic Impact & Cultural Leadership
Brief
Throughout 2024, a diverse collective of clients—including Aboriginal Affairs NSW, IAG, CommBank, and the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia—engaged Campfire x to facilitate deeper connections with First Nations communities. The primary objective was to address the lack of authentic representation and cultural safety within corporate and government sectors. By applying a First Nations lens to complex areas like the legal system, risk management, and environmental preparation, the goal was to educate “at risk” Australians and institutional stakeholders on the value of Indigenous-led solutions.
Idea
Building on years of investigative research and deep community ties, Campfire x landed on a 2024 strategic concept focused on “The Power of Presence.” This involved producing a suite of high-end cinematic documentaries, campaign reels, and digital assets that moved beyond corporate rhetoric. The core message centred on the shared knowledge of First Nations experts—ranging from Legal Liaison Officers like Stella within the court system to traditional Land Management Practitioners. The strategy was designed to showcase how First Nations methodologies can be successfully integrated into modern Australian frameworks to achieve better outcomes for all citizens.
Execution
The 2024 portfolio was executed over a continuous 12-month period, involving extensive travel to regional and remote locations across Australia, as well as international representation in Venice and Los Angeles.
- Cultural Protocols: A central pillar of the execution was the strict adherence to cultural protocols and smoking ceremonies to ensure spiritual and physical safety on Country.
- Trust-Based Production: For projects involving the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, we prioritised building trust with Indigenous Family Liaison Officers (IFLOs), allowing for authentic storytelling that explains the support available to First Nations parties.
- Shifting Industry Norms: Campfire x continued to educate corporate partners on changing internal policies to accommodate non-traditional production schedules. This prioritised relational timelines over rigid storyboards, ensuring that community voices remained uncompromised during the filming of Cultural Burning and community mentorship programmes.
Outcome
The 2024 initiatives have delivered substantial impact across broadcast, digital, and community platforms:
- Visibility: Content was featured prominently across national networks including NITV and SBS, as well as being showcased at the World Indigenous Business Forum.
- Digital Engagement: The 2024 campaigns and project reels collectively saw an increase in impressions across social and corporate channels.
- Global Acclaim: The agency’s work was selected for international film festivals, including New Film Makers Los Angeles, and it received a Silver Award for the 5th Annual Anthem Awards in New York.
- Social Impact: The broader outcome has been a significant uptake in everyday Australians and corporate leaders wanting to learn more about First Nations protocols, land management, and legal rights, directly contributing to a more informed and inclusive national narrative.
